Almost there...

There is a lot of little crap to do when starting up a business. Even a web store, if you want to do it right. And we're going all the way:

All you guys reading this on Facebook, you thought I was joking when I said I was now a corporation! It's a tax thing.

We should be able to open up for business this week. All we're really waiting for is some email gremlins to take care of themselves - can't run a web store if your email's down. And it'd be nice to have a second shipment to put up, which will hopefully be tomorrow.

Once that's all done, I'll have more time to post some regular shit here. I've got stuff going back to Valentine's Day that I've been meaning to talk about.

  1. Tokyo Rebel is an EXCELLENT store name! Killer. I'll be checking every day til the store is up!

  2. Thanks :)

Just don't be disappointed with the initial selection! It will be pretty small, like 20-30 items. We'll be constantly adding more, though. Hopefully in a couple months we will have all the manufacturers on board and will be getting stuff direct, and then we'll have some serious inventory. We just need to show them something first. Part of it's cultural, they really want to know we're serious and have an actual store. I think most American companies would probably just sell to anybody who could pay. But the Japanese companies aren't like that. They do sound eager to sell, especially with the economy how it is, but they all just want to see something first. We're going to contact them again pretty much immediately after launching.

  3. Oh, and I'm glad you like the name and hope other people do too (it looks pretty good in a logo), but it was honestly like my sixth choice! I picked it because the url was available and there was no trademark. Kinda sucks that there are so many people in the world these days that we're all reduced to just taking whatever scraps are left for names... that's why most new companies these days have nonsensical, made up names. There's just hardly anything plain English left.

  4. jeff!! wow, congratz. what a big step for you.

Will you be carrying "hysteric glamour"? =)

  5. Didn't quite make it to Ippudo! We got there literally as they were closing - watched them turn the sign around as we were walking up to the door. Really annoying. We'll go back, though.

We might carry Hysteric Glamour, although we honestly hadn't really been pursuing them up to now. We've got six or seven brands that we *really* want, and then we'll see beyond that. We kinda want stuff that's a little further out there. So we're going after Algonquins, Sex Pot Revenge, Hellcat Punks, Sexy Dynamite London, Baby, the Stars Shine Bright, Super Lovers, Angelic Pretty, Peace Now/Black Peace Now and any of the s-inc (h.naoto) labels, which are all managed by the same guy.

If we can't get them, or can only get a few, then we'll expand our target list. We're also trying to decide if we want to carry stuff like Hell Bunny and Tripp, which are western labels that takes heavy inspiration from Japan. I'm not sure about that yet either. We'd probably be able to get them pretty easily, though, and prices would be a lot lower. I don't want us to just be another Trash & Vaudeville, though.

About This Blog

This is increasingly not a blog about Alphabet City, New York. I used to live in the East Village and work on Avenue B, but I no longer do. Why don't I change the name if I'm writing about Japan and video games and guitars? Because New Yorkers are well-rounded people with varied interests, and mine have gone increasingly off the rails over the years. And I don't feel like changing the name. I do still write about New York City sometimes.
