What the hell is this?

So I was walking through the East Village and I came across this monstrosity. I don't remember it being there last time I walked around there. Anyone know wtf it is? It's completely out of character for the neighborhood, or even the city.

Apparently, it's the Cooper Union School of engineering:

  2. Yeah, that's unbelievable. Their original building is a building where Abraham Lincoln spoke, it's one of the great classic old buildings of New York City. And now this is their encore??

  3. I definitely see how this building is quite the thing to 'stumble upon', and how it is out of character with its surroundings. It kind of looks like they decided to take input from Dr. Seuss when it came to the building's design. If I found this while walking in the East Village--though I can't walk, inasmuch as I am a building myself--I would think that I had accidentally wandered into a children's book.

That is absolutely the most hideous monstrosity I've ever seen in Manhattan! It totally destroys the character of the East Village, plus there's a beautiful 200 year old church standing just behind it that now thanks to this monster, you can not even see! Who the hell designed this turd? Why isn't there any achitectural laws in NYC? All they care about is money & greed, instead of taking the time to at least design something new of beauty keeping in alignment w/the neighborhood & skyline. Other cities have these type of guidelines. It's really a shame,to destroy the East Village & manhattan like this. This cold, lifeless, souless, piece of tin trash!!!!!????? Please bring back the days of artistry & craftmanship when people took pride in their work & put true beauty into their designs. It makes me so sad to see this corrupt destruction of our city. :(

It's the new academic building for Cooper Union. It houses not only engineering students, but students of all three schools.

It was designed by a Cooper Union architecture alumni. It is an eyesore, admittedly. As Cooper student, I didn't really understand why admin. wanted a new building; I guess making more money by leasing the land the former engineering building was on is better for everyone... maybe. Not so good for the art and engineering students who don't get along. It seems to be an innate sense of rivalry/hate. lols. And the eyesore catches that very well. :D

...it's a spaceship. Don't let anyone tell you differently. >.>

About This Blog

This is increasingly not a blog about Alphabet City, New York. I used to live in the East Village and work on Avenue B, but I no longer do. Why don't I change the name if I'm writing about Japan and video games and guitars? Because New Yorkers are well-rounded people with varied interests, and mine have gone increasingly off the rails over the years. And I don't feel like changing the name. I do still write about New York City sometimes.
